The furthest day trip of the week (~1 hr via the A11) and the one where it's easiest to overreach. Pick two or three anchor sights and let the rest of the day be wandering — trying to "do" Florence in a day doesn't work, and isn't the goal.

Florence's centro storico is a strict ZTL — don't drive in
The historic centre is one of the most tightly enforced ZTLs in Italy, active most of the day and camera monitored on every entry point. Driving to your hotel door is not an option here the way it might be elsewhere.
Park at an outer car park and ride the tram in instead. Coming from the A11, Parcheggio Villa Costanza is the easiest option — a large Park & Ride connected to tram line T1, which runs straight into the centre (Santa Maria Novella / Unità area) in about 20 minutes. Buy tram tickets at the car park machines before boarding.
Pacing a single day
- Book ahead or skip it. The Duomo dome climb and the Uffizi both require timed, pre-booked entry — walk-up queues run 2–3 hours in season. If you haven't booked, plan around the outside of these rather than losing half the day in a line.
- Pick one big museum, not two. Uffizi and Accademia in the same day is a common mistake — each easily takes 2+ hours including queueing and needs a break either side. Choose one.
- Late morning arrival works fine. With a ~1 hour drive plus parking and the tram, aim to be in the centre by mid-morning rather than racing for opening time.
- Save Piazzale Michelangelo for golden hour. The uphill walk (or short taxi) is worth timing for sunset before heading back to the car.

Uffizi Gallery
Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo — one of the world's great collections. Pre-book a timed slot; walk-up queues run hours in season.
Ponte Vecchio
The medieval bridge lined with jewellers, over the Arno — best appreciated from Ponte Santa Trìnita nearby, especially at golden hour.
Piazzale Michelangelo
The classic postcard view over the whole city — a 20-minute uphill walk from the Oltrarno side, or a short taxi if you want to save your legs.
Basilica di Santa Croce
Franciscan basilica and the burial place of Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli — usually calmer than the Duomo queues.
Oltrarno / Santo Spirito
The 'other side' of the river — artisan workshops, fewer tour groups, and a good lunch stop away from the main sights.

The famous schiacciata sandwich counter — good for a fast, cheap bite between sights, expect a line.

Relaxed Oltrarno osteria on a leafy piazza, well away from the main tourist crush.
